It’s time to show some personality! “Brand voice” is a term used to describe your company’s personality in any online communication. It’s important to have a consistent brand voice that engages your customers and helps drive the message of what you represent.
Figuring out your brand voice isn’t always easy. You just have to craft the perfect online persona that everyone will love. No pressure, right? A great way to start is to ask yourselves a few questions: If your company was a person, who would they be? What would they sound like? What would they care about?
Mirror, Mirror
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! The easiest way to craft your perfect brand voice is to base it off of your customers. People will always want to buy a product or service from a brand that sounds like someone they can relate to.
If you don’t have a loyal following yet, this is where you can craft your brand voice to imitate the type of person you want to attract to your business, a.k.a. your target audience.
Imitation is especially useful if your target audience is fairly narrow, but if you have a larger target audience, then you’ll have to be a little more general. For example: if your target audience is aged 18-24, you can use language and make references specific to that generation. However, if you’re trying to reach a wider age range, then those same terms may not be understood by everyone.
Once you’ve nailed the persona you want to use, you have to figure out how that person would speak. Do they say “y’all” or “you guys”? Is something “cool” or is it “badass”? Since you can’t see or hear someone over text online, the verbiage you use will determine how your personality comes across.
These parts can take a little bit of research. You don’t want to wind up coming off cheesy or inauthentic. We don’t want any “how do you do, fellow kids?” moments here!
You’ll also want to consider what your brand persona would care about, and stay up to date on events surrounding that topic. This could be things like TV shows, music, or industry-specific news. Everyone loves a good pop culture reference!
Now that you have a brand voice, where do you use it? The short answer is… everywhere!
From your text posts and captions to videography or photography, it is important to always use the same brand voice. Remember to use the same style of writing, the same amount of emojis, and the same style of jokes on all of your social media. Consistency is key!
