Who are you online? Nailing down your brand voice can sometimes take a back seat to your creative workflow. You’re focused on content, algorithms, trends, and all the intricacies of growing your brand – who has time for this brand voice thing?!

If this sounds like you πŸ‘†πŸΌ, there’s good news and bad news.

The bad news – you’re missing out on a key building block of your social media strategy. The good news? We’re going to fix that with this 10-minute exercise. πŸ’ͺ

Building A Personality

You might have a couple of keywords in mind that you use when posting; i.e. “warm” or “funny”. Here’s the thing – single words by themselves leave too much open to interpretation. You need to go deeper. In order to build a personality you need to build… a person!

No, not the Frankenstien kind. You need to build out the characteristics and personality of a hypothetical person.

Sit down with your team and reverse engineer a character by asking: Who is your target customer? What do they like and who do they connect with? What drives their decision-making?

Hi, My Name Is…

Pull up a word doc and copy these points over to fill out with your team. Feel free to add in your own categories to fill out.

The more questions you can answer about this person, the stronger your brand voice will be!

β€’ Name: πŸ‘‹
β€’ Age: πŸ“…
β€’ Gender: πŸ’
β€’ Current residence: 🏠
β€’ Hometown: 🏘️
β€’ Relationship status: πŸ’
β€’ Children and pets: πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦πŸΎ
β€’ Hobbies: πŸŽ¨πŸƒ
β€’ Favorite TV shows/ movies: πŸ“Ί
β€’ Favorite music: 🎡
β€’ Fashion style: πŸ‘•
β€’ Go-to joke: πŸ˜‚

Reminder: We recommend using your target audience‘s demographic info to help fill out some of these questions. If you’re still struggling to answer some of these, think of real-life people or celebrities with qualities you’d want to emulate.

Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself

Keep that word document and make sure everyone has a copy. Now, every time someone goes to post something, they can check back and think: how would our BV say this? πŸ€”

Boom! Now your brand consistency is flawless.

This activity is perfect for getting a new brand voice started or for strengthening an existing brand voice.

The team-building is just an extra perk! Because everyone built this brand voice together, everyone’s personalities have a chance to shine through just a little bit.
